See you in Palm Springs next year?

Lots of neat things happening around here.  Our “Ukulele Trio + 1” show this past Saturday evening at The Strum Shop in Roseville was fabulous … even if I do say so myself.  (Thanks John, Tori and Zack.  You were awesome!)  Add to that, we’ve finally gotten a little rain, and last night at the Torch Club my friend Beth Grigsby and her Red’s Blues band (Robert Sidwell on guitar, Beth’s husband R.W. on bass and Larry Carr on drums) brought along not one, but two “special guests,” both on harmonica:  Bay Area great Mark Hummel, and Sacramento native Kyle Rowland!  A fabulous night of blues.

Coming soon:  News about our upcoming Green Valley Theatre Verte Fe’e Holiday Cabaret, December 12 & 13.  Just as much fun as our past Cabarets, except that we’re working to make this one “family friendly.”  (Maybe 50% or so less nudity, just for the holidays?)  Plans right now (subject to change – or our Music Director’s whims) are for my dueting on two favorite tunes:  Irving Berlin’s “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep” from “White Christmas,” and the fabulous “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” the Frank Loesser song premiered in the movie “Neptune’s Daughter.”

But for now I can hardly wait until February, when PlayUke.net’s Doug Reynolds and Rich Dann roll out their inaugural Palm Springs Ukulele Festival.  They’ve already lined up a ton of talent, including Victoria Vox (check out her new CD, “When the Night Unravels”), Fred Sokolow (Check him out backing up Jim Beloff on Jumpin’ Jim’s new double-CD set, “Dreams I Left in Pockets”), Brad Ranola (percussionist with the fabulous KLON Latin Jazz All-Stars), Seattle’s jazz guitar and uke star Michael Powers, and a host of others.  It all happens Feb. 6-8 at the Hilton Palm Springs, and it gets underway on the 6th with a fun ukulele pool party!:

Info, including hotel reservation links, registration and FAQ at www.playuke.net.  Hope to see you there!  (I’ll be easy to find.  I’ll probably eschew my usual all black outfit for the loudest Tiki shirt I can find!)

Election News!

First off, don’t forget to elect to come out to The Strum Shop in Roseville CA this coming Saturday evening for our big workshop and show.  Info and tickets at www.meetup.com/StrumShopEvents/events/205464982/

In the meantime, hope you voted this past Tuesday.  Unfortunately, however, I couldn’t find any great candidates or issues in the ukulele department.  Unlike 2006, when this guy ran for Congress in the San Diego CA area, but didn’t make it:

ALAN UKE!  With a name like that, how could he have lost?

But speaking of losers, a few years ago Dr. Tan Chen Bock ran unsuccessfully for Mayor of Singapore.  His concession video (with ukulele) sets a very high standard for the usual stoic concession speeches:  www.youtube.com/watch?v=rywPgwDk9vM&

Anyway, with the 2014 election now in the history books, I’m kicking off my 2016 campaign with the slogan “Two (or more) ukuleles in every garage!”  See you at the polls.
